Guaido takes message of opposition to oil state

Guaido takes message of opposition to oil state (14 Apr 2019) Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaidó on Saturday began a three-day visit to Zulia, a state that is under the control of President Nicolás Maduro's ruling party.

Thousands of people waited for more than four hours in the state capital of Maracaibo to greet Guaido, who has proclaimed himself the country's interim leader.

He urged his cheering supporters to continue their protests against the Maduro government, and not to give up in the face of collapsing public services.

"Venezuela does not kneel before anyone," he declared.

It was the latest stage of a campaign of visits across the country to restore the momentum of opposition protests, which have declined in recent weeks.

Maracaibo is regarded as the centre of Venezuela's once-mighty oil industry.

But now there's a shortage of tapwater because power blackouts have affected the city's pumping facilities.
