The pilot of the Japanese F-35 that crashed into the Pacific Ocean Tuesday called for the night training mission to be aborted shortly after takeoff.

The aircraft went missing about 30 minutes after taking off from Misawa air base in northern Japan. The aircraft was flying with three other F-35As in a night training mission.

On Wednesday the Japanese military confirmed that the aircraft had crashed and debris had been recovered.

Japanese Defense Minister Takeshi Iwaya told journalists that portions of the aircraft’s two tail fins had been recovered. The unnamed pilot was in his 40s with more than 3,200 hours of flying experience, according to the Japanese military. He had 60 hours flying time in the F-35.
