U.N. Calls On U.S. To Ensure Safe Access To Abortions, Citing Recent Legislation

U.N. Calls On U.S. To Ensure Safe Access To Abortions, Citing Recent Legislation According to a report by Reuters, on Tuesday, the United Nations human rights office called on the United States to ensure that women have access to safe abortion, claiming that recent bans lead to risky underground abortions that could endanger a woman's life. On Friday, Missouri signed a bill into law that prohibits women from seeking an abortion after the eighth week of pregnancy, just days after Alabama enacted the most restrictive abortion law in the country. U.N. human rights spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani reportedly said, "We are very concerned that several U.S. states have passed laws severely restricting access to safe abortion for women, including by imposing criminal penalties on the women themselves and on abortion service providers."
