Unintentionally Bad “Friendly” Things to Say to a Disabled Person

Unintentionally Bad “Friendly” Things to Say to a Disabled Person Ugh, I forgot one of my favorites: complimenting a wheelchair user or thinking their disability is “improving” because you see them out of a wheelchair. They probably just use a wheelchair at some times and not others! (And for all you know, they had to go without today because their wheelchair is broken or a place isn’t accessible...that’s not a good thing!)

Also when people project stereotypical qualities on someone they haven’t gotten to know like “she’s always happy,” “he’s so loving,” “all people with whatever syndrome are gentle and kind”—just because that’s their stereotype of disabled people, or because that type of bland compliment is the only positive thing they can think of to say.
