Good education and sporting opportunities offer alternatives to a gang-related lifestyle, but they’re of little value when the child doesn’t have a vision for his future, know how to make good choices and get out of the negative cycle. Where you are born can shape who you are and the way your life will play out, the decisions you make, even as a younger child can change where you end up. Growing up in Eldorado Park known for crime, gangs, drugs and violence hardened Wandile Billings, but a choice to join the right soccer team changed his and his family’s future forever. Growing Champions is a development programme that aids young men in rising above poverty, drugs and violence to lead a healthy life through sport and education, on EOTO today he tells us how joining this initiative changed the course of his future.
