Is Continuity Important for Cartoons and Animation?

We're big fans of animator Butch Hartman and one of his videos inspired us to discuss the importance of consistency in the art style and animation of a show. It's something we've been talking about in our She-ra reviews. And while we can understand how artists and writers would prefer to not be held back in any way it is something that's noticeable to the audience. We would prefer consistency in character design and backgrounds but what do you guys think?
