After a cut, a suspension and a trade that never materialized, the Patriots made their latest move to replace Rob Gronkowski. The Patriots acquired Roberts from the Lions on Thursday for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2020, the Detroit News reported.
Roberts had a disappointing two seasons in Detroit after being taken in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft. Roberts battled a shoulder injury his second season after catching three touchdowns in his first two games. He finished the year with nine catches for 100 yards.
Roberts adds another question mark to the Patriots’ tight end puzzle after Gronkowski’s retirement. Ben Watson was suspended the first four games of the season, Austin Seferian-Jenkins was waived and Kyle Rudolph ended up signing a new deal with the Vikings.
“No one is going to make any excuses for our offense,” quarterback Tom Brady said recently. “The tight end position is a big part of our offense and those guys are going to have to do a great job for us.”
For now, Roberts will be competing with Matt LaCosse, Stephen Anderson, Ryan Izzo and undrafted rookie Andrew Beck, at least until Watson returns in Week 5.
