CELTIC are now three days into their pre-season summer camp in Austria, and Scott Brown is delighted with the impact the club’s fresh faces have had so far. Like Hoops boss Neil Lennon, the club captain has been suitably impressed with new Bhoy Marian Shved on the training pitch, and was likewise pleased with Mikey Johnston and Ewan Henderson’s contributions during the Scottish champions' 6-1 win over SC Pinkafeld on Wednesday evening.
“It’s been very good, the weather has been phenomenal, it was 37 degrees out on the training field earlier,” said Brown after the first of two sessions earlier today. “We managed to get a good running session in, no balls, but it’s been interesting and we’ve worked well in this heat. Our main focus is on pressing and making sure we’re fitter than any other team we play in the league.
“Today’s session was about showing why that is, because whether it’s 37 degrees or minus five in Scotland, we still put the same effort in and still work the same way.
“Marian has been great, he’s come out on the training pitch with us and he’s been fantastic in the changing room, he’s spoke to the lads and he’s trained really well. He’s scored a couple of crackers at training as well. It’s good to see him eventually training with the boys.
“The lads played very well, and it was great to see Leigh out there as well, he got 45 minutes in his legs. For me, Mikey Johnston, Ewan Henderson, those guys have been fantastic. Mikey came on, took the captain’s armband and has been chatting away to me, telling me how proud he was. It’s fantastic to see him wearing that and to see him score a couple of goals too.”
Celtic’s returning international stars were rested for last night’s friendly encounter, but are expected to be integrated into the matchday squads for the next two upcoming games. In the downtime between sessions today, Brown posed in the Hoops’ new away kit for the 2019/20 campaign, alongside teammate Shved.
He added: “I followed in the same steps as the international lads with regards to the injuries I’ve had, so it’s just about getting the minutes on the pitch and catching up with everyone else. I feel good myself, but it’s about match fitness now and seeing where I am there.
“And I love the new strip. I think it’s fantastic, it fits well, it looks well, and here’s hoping we can get a few good results in it this season.”
