While you're building sounds take a moment to create several variations each of the sounds you make. This can be done simply by changing the balance between different layers, EQ and panning automation, or swapping out different sounds. Export all of these variations as stereo or surround files to use again in the same project, or another in the future. If you need five similar sounding explosions but not the exact same explosion it's much easier to go through your different layers create variations then to try to randomize and create variations from a single element.
Let's say you spent half an hour creating the perfect explosion sound, maybe it's perfect for this one moment in your film, but if you export five more versions of this explosion with different amounts of debris or different amounts of fire etc. You just saved yourself at least half an hour remaking those sounds over and over again.
