So let me start by saying (or rather typing) that I am not a doctor or a medical professional - I am a Digital Marketer.
I run a marketing agency called Dominate Media, so don’t mistake any of the contents of this Quick Start Guide - or any of my commentary on health or fitness - as medical advice.
Please consult your doctor for personalized medical advice and always seek the advice of a physician, or other qualified healthcare provider, before making any changes to your diet or exercise routine.
Okay, now back to the story.
About 7 years ago, I was in the best shape of my life.
I was vegan.
I was doing yoga 3-5 times a week.
I was running 5ks and even thinking about training for a triathlon (except that I REALLY don’t know how to swim… I know how to not drown while in the water, but I know that’s not the same thing as swimming).
I felt good and I looked good.
Then, I decided to take a new job as the National Sales Manager for an air conditioning manufacturer.
And this new job came with a moderate pay increase but a MASSIVE increase in stress level.
Here is what a “normal” week looked like for me as the National Sales Manager:
I would get on a plane early in the week (no later than Monday) to travel to a client's location.
I would do a 1 hour sales presentation presentation then drive to 2-3 other locations and do THE SAME EXACT presentation.
Then, in the evening, I would take the client to a $400, 3-hour long dinner so that we could talk business.
If I was lucky, I would get to my hotel room around midnight (it was usually MUCH later) and try to pass out as quickly as possible, so I could get some sleep before I had to wake up at 6 AM, so that I could do THE SAME sales presentation 2-3 times per day.
I would usually have to do this for 2 more days before I could go back home… and get ready for next week, so that I could do it all again.
I was travelling so much with this new job, I didn’t have time to take care of myself like I used to.
I went from practicing yoga 3-5 times a week to washing a ribeye steak down with a couple of glasses of wine 3-5 times a week.
… And ultimately, I ended up gaining around 35 pounds.
Fast forward to last year, when I made the decision that it's time to TRY to get back into shape and lose the weight I had put on.
Considering I USED to be in great shape I thought it wasn't going to be a big deal - All I would need to do is “eat better” and “exercise more” (you know, the standard fitness advice) and I would be able to get back into shape.
But despite my efforts, nothing was working.
Even though I was eating salads regularly, choosing “health” foods instead of cookies and desserts, and working out a few times a week, I still wasn't seeing any results.
I had 35 pounds to lose and the traditional calorie counting wasn’t working for me.
I KNEW I needed to try something extreme.
So I started doing the Ketogenic (aka. “Keto”) diet.
