Introducing Tom Digbeu 'aka the Lamelo ball replacement'
So Tom Digbeu is a 6'5" French guard who is 17 years old, one month younger than LaMelo. The son of Atlanta Hawks 1997 second-round draft pick Alain Digbeu, who despite being drafted never actually played an NBA game and instead spent his career playing Euroleague and Euro cup in Italy, France, Spain, and Greece.
Tom earlier in his teenage years was considered one of the most promising European talents in his class, featuring in the Jordan brand classic international game and Adidas Eurocamp in 2017.
He comes from the famed youth academy of Spanish powerhouse FC Barcelona, the same city he was born in as his dad also played for Barca from 1999 to 2002,
For 3 years Tom starred for Barcelona U18s team in the EuroLeague junior When last featured, Digbeu averaged 14.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game, enough to warrant All-Tournament Team selection.
And last season as apart of Barca's reserve team in the Spanish second division. Where he averaged 3.9 points and 1.3 rebounds per game, featuring in around 13 minutes of action off the bench.
Tom is undeniably one of the most athletic guards in his class, and his main selling points are finishing at the rim and perimeter defense. However, the downfall with him as a prospect the last few years has been because of his lack of reliable shooting and playmaking for his position.
His stock plummetting is the reason for his decision to switch things up this year, moving from the Catalan giants and inking a deal with Zalgiris early august of this year.
Digbeu is headed to Lithuania in hopes of reviving his draft stock, and to re-establish himself as one of the best international players, and depending on how his 2019-20 season goes, there is a good chance that he decides to enter the 2020 NBA draft.
Though he will have to take major strides next year in Lithuania, to get his name back on the NBA draft boards.
His name, for the most part, has been forgotten in euro hoops, given the already stacked class of European guards. With Theo Maledon, Kylian Hayes and Deni Avdija taking all the headlines as projected first-rounders. And that's 3 right there, before even mentioning Lamelo and RJ in Australia, nevermind the guard talent in college basketball either.
Of the European prospects, Digbeu might have the most interesting set of physical tools
Digby has the most interesting set of physical tools from this group of players, as one of the top athletes in the 2020-eligible class.
His case as a draft prospect for next year’s draft relies on his ability to get to the rim and his projection as a versatile perimeter defender. Digbeu will need to make serious improvement as a shooter and as a ball-handler before seeing a single minute at the NBA level, as his ability to make plays for others, even on a secondary level, will be severely limited in the NBA unless he improves in both of those areas.
And so far he's showed promise in the preseason, recently recording a double-double against BC Astana, who play in the strong Russian-based VTB United League.
Though he'll need more of these performances to find his way back on NBA radar, to do so he'll need to have a comeback season this year, similar to the one lamelo had at spire as a senior. And do significantly better in Lithuania this season than Lamelo did that's for sure,
