This latest polling data will bring much needed good news for Brexiteers.

According to a Westminster Voting Intentions poll by Opinion Research for the Observer, the Tories are still romping it and leaving their opponents struggling in their wake.

Now you may not like the Boris Johnson Withdrawal Agreement treaty, but at least someone who wants to take us out of the EU is leading the polls.

As you can see from this graph of Westminster Voting Intentions data from an Opinium Poll for the Observer, where the latest poll for each party is indicated by the blue bar on the left, the Tories are now enjoying a 16 point lead over the Jeremy Corbyn Labour Party in second place.

The Lib Dems have slipped back a point and lie on 15% and The Brexit Party has shed two points to now have only ten percent of the vote.

The SNP gained a percent and rise to 5%, while the Greens drop one to three percent and the rest share the final three percent.

Boris Johnson is proving to be a formidable electoral force where the other leaders are concerned. He's pushing back the left while, so far, reducing the relevance of Nigel Farage and The Brexit Party in the process.

Now, the same poll threw up the result that 57% of people think it would have been better not to hold the 2016 EU referendum, as opposed to 29% who think it was the right thing to do.

Now, some will try and portray that as proof that the UK had changed its mind.

But that would not explain the boost Boris is getting in that same poll.

My interpretation, and it's only my interpretation, would be that people look back and think - maybe we shouldn't have opened that can of worms, but now that we have we need to get on with respecting the result.

Further, I would say that had that referendum not been held, it would have stored up huge resentment among a lot of people in the UK - the steam had to be let off at some point by a public vote in the end anyway, and that could have been through a Eurosceptic party like UKIP at the time, storming to a strong result in a General Election.

So, looking at these voting intentions it's no wonder that Remainer MPs currently sat in the Commons are so scared of a General Election.

But Boris is due to give them another chance to vote for a General Election tomorrow, with the election likely to be held on Thursday the 12th of December.

This vote among MPs tomorrow, will take place under the Fixed Term Parliament Act so a number of MPs equal to two thirds or more of all MP seats must vote for a general election before one can be held. And that means a minimum of 434 out of 650 MPs must vote Yes, and if 217 MPs or more either abstain or vote against it, then no election will take place.

And early indications are that the government will not get the numbers to force an election.

There has been talk that the SNP and Lib Dems will support the government, but that would only make up 342 MPs, far from sufficient at 92 seats short.

Further, the SNP and Lib Dems said they want to hold any election on Monday the 9th of December to maximise the chances of students voting.

The only way to get an election now, is for the government to use an act of Parliament for a one off early election. That would only require a simple majority of MPs and that could be achieved with SNP and Lib Dem support.

But as I've explained before, this would require a bill to go through parliament and that bill would be amendable by MPs.

This could easily end up with 16 and 17 year olds getting to vote in it, as well as anything else that Remainer MPs could think of to load the election in their favour.

The Remainers know that holding any General Election on traditional terms would almost certainly ensure that Boris romped home with a hefty majority.

So they will do all they can to avoid that - even if it means them sitting in parliament until the next time an election must be held - in May 2022, while trying to reverse Brexit all the while!
