13:09 - 5 important tips for (international) applicants
**********
This is my take on the international application process for Ontario universities. Yes, I'm falsely advertising it as if I knew how it's done everywhere in Canada but I assume you probably start your research on national level unless you have already figured out which city you're interested in studying.
I applied to a couple of universities in 2019 undergrad cycle. When I was doing a little research for this video I noticed that OUAC had updated their online application platform and some of the things had chances. So this information I'm sharing might not be relevant after a year or two.
These are my 5 tips that you should keep in mind when you apply:
#1 - Apply early. Especially if you know that you're gonna need a study permit. The bigger the university and more popular the program, the slower they're gonna process the applications. Plus there are usually only limited spaces available to any program, so if you want it bad, you better be the first one to reserve you the place. Someone else will take it, if you don't.
#2 - Do your research. Combine this with tip #1. I began my research 6 months before the application cycle started to find out where to apply and what type of programs were available. This should give you enough time to ensure that you meet all the prerequisites and figure out which programs and universities you wanna apply to. Get all your questions answered before the application period starts so you're several steps ahead of all the other applicants. Use OUAC and the universities' own websites. Online forums (and Youtube) are a great source for other peoples' experiences.
#3 - Plan ahead. Not all the universities are gonna process your application at same phase. So you might end up receiving admission offers at different times. If you know that you're not gonna want to study in some of the programs you have applied to, you can apply to another program in the same university without having to pay any additional fees if you decline the place within the application period. This kind of strategic trick playing does come with a risk: it might work - like it did for me - or you end up getting wait-listed and never get admission to that program. So be careful.
#4 - Update carefully. After you have submitted your application on OUAC and you decide to make changes to it, make sure you make all the changes at once. Since the platform is gonna lock the application from you for 12 hours - sometimes even longer if there's a rush hour. Avoid making any major changes close to the end of the application period cause they might not get processed before the application period ends.
#5 - Whenever you submit documents or are in contact with the universities or OUAC, use your Reference Number and/or your student number in file names, enquiry titles, etc. It makes the communication a lot faster and ensures your documents go to the right place.

I hope you found this guide helpful. The original video was over 30 mins long so I have had to make some artistic decisions on certain parts of this video so that it wouldn't get too long. I intend to make separate videos on post-secondary education in Finland vs. Canada as well as how to complete the English proficiency requirement in the future - stay tuned for that!
