Wearing earbuds all the time could cause ear infections because a bunch of wax builds up, according to health experts Yahoo News spoke with.
Think itchy, painful and smelly infections.
And it’s worse for folks who live in more humid areas.
That’s because our ears naturally produce wax to help with cleaning and lubrication, according to The Sun.
It’s a problem when something blocks the path of wax out of the ears; which means earplugs and hearing aids are also part of the problem.
They can cause wax buildup.
It’s not just wax but a disgusting combination of dirt, oil, dead skin and sweat.
Back to what I said before about humid environments.
Water – or sweat - trapped behind a bunch of wax buildup can cause ear infections because it creates a dark, moist environment which is a breeding ground for germs.
A pro-tip from a health expert Business Insider spoke with is to let your ears self-clean and use over-the-ear alternatives.
Infections can be reintroduced if you put earbuds back in and they’re still dirty.
It’s also a good idea to clean them every day with an alcohol wipe which kills the bacteria.
That advice should be music to your ears!
