In Spain, mass protests gripping the Catalan capital Barcelona are being compared to the pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, as uproar over the jailing of independence leaders sweeps through Catalonia. A general strike by pro-independence unions has brought much of the area to a halt. Flights have been cancelled and road and rail links disrupted.
