As a tween several years ago, AWA covered The Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love," on Sweden’s ‘The X Factor’ and walked away a winner. There's a certain charm to the way AWA presents herself to others, and the judges - meaning millions of home viewers - knew what they liked and wanted: the vocal gifts and natural grace of the precocious Stockholm native with the stylish looks, startling poise and R&B grit. Wisely, AWA, whose full name is Awa Santesson-Sey, laid low for a bit, trying to dodge the curse of being a one-hit wonder. Along the way she nurtured the talent that had been obvious since her childhood days, where she'd dominated the family room and entertained her Swedish mom and Senegalese dad with impromptu performances. In a parallel career as a model, she’s worked for H&M, and was styled-up in an episode of TRESemmé’s series, 'The Blowout Chair.' On top of all this, AWA collabed with the Norwegian electrosoul duo Loveless on “Bad4U,” and moved to the UK for a little life experience. London was rough at first, but it’s the place where AWA has met her musical fam, with producers Ebenezer (Stefflon Don, Duke Dumont), Aston Rudi (Mahalia, Anaïs) and Show N Prove (Ann-Marie, Tinie Tempah). Perpetually inspired by Lady Bey’s versatility, the two tunes she performed for our Artists To Watch session, "F**kin' Love Songs" and "Comfortable" have sass, heart, and swag - a wealth of emotions bubble up in AWA’s music. She says the message of the former tune, a classic break-up track, is to "channel the sadness and hurt into a song, to use that emotion in some useful way." Watch her deliver that in front of our cameras and you'll have no doubts of her future.
