The original composition is Chopin's fourth étude in his Opus. 25 set. Like his previous études, its composition date is unknown but it was published in 1837.
*An Étude being a piece which is intended to develop a certain skill or to develop a difficult technique.
The "Paganini" étude is usually played at a speed of ~160 bpm (Agitato), although changing to Lento (~50 bpm) in the coda. It is less popular than Chopin's other pieces but is still difficult nonetheless, featuring a syncopated chord progression (similar to that of ragtime) with great distance between the bass notes, usually a tenth apart. The right hand features chords which are also syncopated with the left hand chords, with a staccato melody appearing at the beginning before being transformed into a legato melody, requiring the performer to have a strong 5th finger (pinky). The composition follows an ABAC-coda form, modulating multiple times, utilizing a Picardy Third to resolve the piece. Its nickname "Paganini" stems from its melody which follows the style of the famous composer Paganini.
"The constant staccato... makes it more musically difficult as well." - Fred Yu
"The ending is marked Lento and pianissimo and the chords are all on beat in stark contrast with the rest of the piece." - Wikipedia
