In what is being seen as a setback to the Gandhi family, SPG security detail for the family is likely to be withdrawn. A review of the security cover extended to the Gandhi family, including Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has recommended removal of protection by the Special Protection Group. But the Gandhis will continue to be protected by either the National Security Guards or the Central Reserve Police Force.

Though this is likely to be escalated into a political controversy, government officials have said that the threat perception of each of those protected by the SPG is reviewed every year. The current review indicates a reduced threat perception for Gandhi’s and their security can be handled by other forces.
