In this video, we discussed the radial and axial clearance of steam turbines and what's its importance? steam turbines have multiple pressure stages -reactionary- and those that have pressure and velocity stages, the radial clearances between the diaphragms and rotor are very-small and rarely exceed a few thousands of an inch consequentially, it is of extreme importance to maintain the rotor-shaft bearings in perfect conditions and perfect adjustment. For instance, sealing strip clearances. Axial clearances are larger on steam turbines with multiple pressure stages and those that have pressure and velocity stages as compared to the radial clearances. But, these axial clearances must be given proper attention at the thrust bearing.

The thrust bearing is basically adjustable during an overhaul to ensure that not only the axial clearance between the vanes etcetera can be adjusted for but also the axial movement of the rotor can be controlled.
