Algeria to go to polls to elect new president

Algeria to go to polls to elect new president (11 Dec 2019) A group of pro-democracy protesters in Algeria have called for a boycott of the upcoming presidential elections, the country's first elections since the overthrow of long-serving President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

They dismissed the election as a sham saying it’s organized by the existing power structure.

Protesters want a whole new political system instead.

There are five presidential candidates, among them are two other former prime ministers.

Many Algerians say that their country is facing dire problems and they cannot afford to sink back into authoritarian rule.

They cite high unemployment and poor public services as motivations for many young people who try to attempt dangerous illegal migration routes to Europe.

The election is being held amid the conviction and sentencing of two former prime ministers for corruption-related charges in a landmark trial,

Algerian authorities hope the televised trial will help convince the public that they are serious about reforming themselves - and persuade people to go out and vote.
