China says US trade deal must be 'mutually beneficial'

China says US trade deal must be 'mutually beneficial' (13 Dec 2019) China says any trade deal with Washington must be "based on the principles of equality and mutual respect."

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying said during Friday briefing a negotiated settlement to their 17-month-old tariff war is "the expectation of the international community."

Hua gave no details of talks with Washington or confirmation the Trump administration planned to announce the delay of a weekend tariff increase.

The Trump administration and China were expected to announce Friday a modest trade agreement that would suspend tariffs that are set to kick in Sunday, de-escalating their trade war.

Hua also accused the US of "developing advanced missiles to seek military advantage" after the Pentagon on Thursday flight-tested a missile that had been banned under a treaty that the US and Russia abandoned last summer.

The test comes amid growing uncertainty about the future of arms control.
