On this episode of Labs Live!, Dan and Tobi reflect on 2019, anticipate 2020 Trends, and introduce our #getstarted engagements with Mary Emerine from our Business Development team. Labs Live! is a stream hosted by Detroit Labs’ own Dan Ward and Tobi Adebisi, where they bring on guests from the Labs team and our clients to talk about the latest in technology, software design and development, and whatever else comes to mind.

In this episode, we did things a little differently. We start out with our guest for a round table episode with, Mary Emerine of our business development team.
We start out reflecting on our year and what Tobi and Mary have seen in the industry. This past year was very strong on the web development side, but what we see now is that companies have apps on several platforms which introduces complexity. You want to have a consistent experience across platforms.
In order to do this, you need services to be able to function (ex: authentication) and in order to create this positive experience, you need a consistent data pipeline in addition to the development and design. Through our experience, we noticed that this is something missing in the marketplace.
We decided to fill the need and build the Detroit Labs Cloud Platform. We started out building a middleware service application framework that would abstract a lot of boiler code you write when building front end apps, and also make it so you can add modules with third party services. The team took it even further by going into the cloud infrastructure as well.
The goal? To build scalable and secure apps that can be used globally very quickly. This has given us the flexibility that we are able to spin up services like push and authentication.
Detroit Labs has a lot of experience in the quick-serve restaurant industry, allowing restaurants, coffee shops, to have an app where customers can select and pay for orders. Given this experience, we applied our knowledge of scalable services into an ordering platform so companies can get an app out quickly.
Next, the crew talks about how 11 years after the app store came about, the view of apps has changed. Companies are putting the goal of redesign, rethink, rebuild first. Users have high expectations of app experiences and require good user experiences, even B2B apps.
We're excited that Accessibility is gaining as much momentum and attention as it is right now. Technology should be for everyone and be able to be used by everyone. Apple and Google are putting a strong emphasis on accessibility and causing everyone to rethink. This is where having a partner whether it be augmenting your team, or consulting with a company like Detroit Labs is helpful.
We've had quite a few innovation groups come to us with ideas that they are looking to bring to life and help them get started. They may not be ready for a full custom build but are looking to get wins under their belt towards a larger project or initiative.
When someone is ready to test out an idea that may not be mature, they can go through a design sprint, build a proof of technology, or do more discovery in order to make sure they are on the right track and sell their ideas in their organization.
