Turkey launches the newest submarine, the first 214 Piri Reis TCG submarines, which were launched on December 22 at the Gölcük Shipyard in northwestern Turkey. The country is building a fleet of six new submarines with 214 independent air power under a contract signed with ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems Germany in 2009.
This submarine has a length of about 65 meters and reaches a speed of 20 knots while diving. This is a submarine that is monitored by the Indonesian Minister of Defense during a visit to Turkey.
Construction of the first ship in its class, TCG Piri Reis, began in 2015. However, technical and financial problems delayed the program for around six years and the first submarine in the class is expected to be handed over to the Turkish Navy in 2020.
The ceremony, led by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, which was also included in the event was cutting steel for the fifth submarine in its class, TCG Seydi Ali Reis.
Speaking at the ceremony, Erdogan said that in 2020, one submarine will start operating every year, where six submarine projects will be completed by 2027.
